four barrel coffee

aka how much coffee I go through in a week (jk)

In many ways, Four Barrel is just another hipster-y snobbish coffee roaster in San Francisco that is hopelessly San Francisco. Which, let’s be honest, isn’t a bad thing. This city has damn good coffee. Four Barrel supplies a lot of coffee shops and retailers around the city, but it operates two cafés (one in the heart of Mission District, the other down in Portola) and partners with The Mill for brick and mortar options around the city.

Four Barrel is everything you’d expect it to be. It’s independently owned, locally run. They source all the coffee they roast, and proudly boast that the coffee comes from “third-generation farmers and mill-workers in Latin America, Indonesia, and East Africa,” ensuring their commitment to partnering with and supporting the humans that make up the coffee chain. And that their vintage German roaster is manned by experts (not computers). And to be fair, it is worth noting in a city known for its technological prowess. Four Barrel is for the people, by the people. And if the cafe itself is any indication, the people feel welcomed.

good to know

Go here for: a coffee date, a solo offline work session

Order this: your favorite espresso drink

Amount of time to spend: it’s the kind of place you want to hang around a bit, great for coffee meet ups

When to come: whenever, it’s pretty consistently bustling throughout the day

Getting here: the Mission location is just a block away from the 16th St Mission BART, and about half a milk from the Church St & 16th J MUNI. Parking can be a pain to find in this area.

Other things to note:

  • They sell coffee online (by the bag, subscription and wholesale) and include some nifty guides for various kinds of brews. They also host classes at the cafes.
  • It’s a popular place for working, but like many SF cafés, they do not have free wifi.
  • Alt milk is oat milk only.
  • Bring your own mug for 25¢ off.
